What Image Resolution Do You Need for a Large Wall Graphic?

An image can look sharp on a computer screen but become blurry or pixelated when enlarged across a large wall.

That is because large-format printing requires enough image detail for the final printed size. The right image depends on three main factors:

  • The physical size of the wall
  • How close people will stand to it
  • The amount of detail in the image

A detailed retail graphic viewed from a few feet away needs more image resolution than an abstract office mural viewed from across a room.

What Does Image Resolution Mean?

Image resolution refers to the amount of detail contained in a digital image.

You may hear designers or printers use the term PPI, which means pixels per inch. In simple terms, it measures how much image detail is available when the artwork is printed at its final size.

The closer someone will stand to the finished wall graphic, the more image detail is usually required.

Example Wall Sizes and Image Requirements

The table below shows the approximate image dimensions needed for several common wall sizes.

Finished Wall SizeStandard Quality

8 ft × 8 ft9,600 × 9,600 pixels14,400 × 14,400 pixels19,200 × 19,200 pixels

12 ft × 8 ft14,400 × 9,600 pixels21,600 × 14,400 pixels28,800 × 19,200 pixels
16 ft × 10 ft19,200 × 12,000 pixels28,800 × 18,000 pixels38,400 × 24,000 pixels

24 ft × 12 ft28,800 × 14,400 pixels43,200 × 21,600 pixels57,600 × 28,800 pixels

These examples are based on approximately 100, 150 and 200 PPI at the final printed size.

For many office, hallway and branded-environment applications, the high-quality range is more than sufficient. Retail graphics, product imagery, faces and designs viewed at close range may require the higher resolution range.

The final requirement should always be confirmed by the large-format print provider because viewing distance, materials and image content can all affect the result.

Why Website and Social Media Images Often Do Not Work

Images taken from websites, social media posts or online presentations are usually designed for screens, not large-format printing.

They may look clear on a phone or laptop but contain too few pixels to be enlarged across a 10-, 15- or 20-foot wall.

Simply increasing the file size or changing the resolution setting does not automatically create real image detail. Enlargement software can add pixels, but it cannot always recreate information that was missing from the original image.

Can AI-Generated Images Be Used for Wall Graphics?

Yes. AI-generated images can work very well for large wall graphics.

They are especially useful for:

  • Abstract artwork
  • Textures and patterns
  • Illustrative environments
  • Landscapes
  • Conceptual imagery
  • Creative branded backgrounds

However, most AI-generated images are not immediately ready for large-format production.

The original image may not be large enough, and details that look convincing on a screen can become noticeably imperfect when enlarged.

Common issues include:

  • Distorted faces, hands or objects
  • Repeating patterns
  • Soft or invented details
  • Unreadable signs or lettering
  • Inconsistent architecture
  • Artificial textures
  • Visible halos or artifacts
  • Product details that are not accurate

The larger the image is printed, and the closer it is viewed, the easier these issues are to notice.

Can AI Upscaling Improve the Image?

AI upscaling can increase the pixel dimensions of an image and improve its appearance at a larger size.

This can work especially well for abstract art, textures, illustrations and landscapes.

However, upscaling cannot guarantee accurate detail where none existed in the original image. It may generate realistic-looking information, but that information is still being created by the software.

For close-view installations, recognizable people, products or brand-critical imagery, the file may still require:

  • Professional upscaling
  • Retouching
  • Sharpening
  • Noise reduction
  • Colour correction
  • Removal of AI artifacts
  • Reconstruction of problem areas

Logos and typography should normally be added separately as clean vector artwork rather than generated inside the AI image.

What File Types Work Best?

Photographs, rendered images and AI-generated artwork should ideally be supplied as:

  • TIFF
  • PSD
  • High-quality PDF
  • Maximum-quality JPEG

Logos, lettering and graphic shapes should be supplied as vector artwork whenever possible:

  • AI
  • EPS
  • Vector PDF
  • SVG

Vector artwork can be enlarged without becoming pixelated, making it the best choice for logos, text and clean graphic elements.

Before You Print

There is no single image resolution that works for every wall graphic.

The right file preparation depends on:

  • Finished wall size
  • Viewing distance
  • Image content
  • Print material
  • Wall surface
  • Lighting
  • Installation environment
  • Required quality level

Before production, the WallScapes Studio team can review the image and determine whether it is:

  • Ready to print
  • Large enough for the wall
  • Suitable for professional upscaling
  • In need of retouching
  • Better recreated or replaced

Send us your image and approximate wall dimensions, and we can help determine the best way to achieve a sharp, professional finished installation.
